giving voice
to the girls
Violence against young women and girls is a persistent problem that continues to limit their ability to contribute to society and development. In the aftermath, girls experience emotional and social discomfort, mental and social damage that can affects their developmental growth.
Young women and girls in Sierra Leone are still dealing with acute forms of sexual violence, including; domestic violence, sexual assault, rape and school-related sexual abuse; as well as supposedly harmful practices such as female genital mutilation (FGM).
Unfortunately, the overwhelming issues associated with sexual violence are most times being compromised and drowned out, by trusted care-givers, parents and traditional leaders.
The stories of girls who experience various levels sexual violence and harmful practices have not been adequately showcased on digital media in Sierra Leone, and similarly, the voices of girls are somewhat ignored in the debate about their own sexual and reproductive health. This leaves a gap in information supply, and in telling human interest stories from the standpoint of the girl.
We believe that amplifying the voice of girls through electronic media, can boost public interest and generate an inclusive call to action, to effect change.
